Victor the Polar Bear was a beloved icon here at Yorkshire Wildlife Park (YWP) and a significant ambassador for his species. His story is one of international travel, conservation, and a peaceful retirement in the heart of Yorkshire.

Early Life and Background

Victor was born at Rostock Zoo in Germany. Before moving to the UK, he lived in the Netherlands, where he was part of the European breeding programme. During his years in that programme, he was a prolific father, siring 13 cubs and leaving behind a legacy of grandchildren all over the world.

Arrival at Yorkshire Wildlife Park

In 2014, after retiring from the European breeding programme, Victor came to us at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park to enjoy his "retirement". His arrival was a major operation, involving a journey by road and ferry from the Netherlands to Doncaster.

Upon his arrival, he became the first resident of Project Polar, our purpose-built 10-acre reserve designed to replicate the Arctic tundra with grassy plains, rocky beaches, and deep-water pools. It one of the largest polar bear conservation reserves in the world.

Life in Yorkshire

Victor quickly became a visitor favourite and a symbol of the park. Over the years, he was joined at Project Polar by other polar bears, including his grandson, Pixel.

He was known for being a "gentle giant," and the park staff took great care to ensure his well-being

Legacy

Victor passed away on August 21, 2020, at the age of 22. His death was met with sadness from staff and visitors alike, as he had become a symbol of our commitment to animal welfare and conservation.

Even after his passing, his memory lives on here at the park and in the local community. A larger-than-life mascot named after him continues to visit local venues, such as the children’s ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, to bring festive cheer and educate the public about the importance of protecting polar bears and the impact of climate change.
